The Origin of Skiing by Guanhong Chen

Altay in Xinjiang, China, is the origin place of human skiing. The intangible cultural heritage of the birthplace of human skiing — Chana, is the earliest tool used for skiing by humans.

This photo set tells the story of the inheritance of skiing culture between Silanbieke, the inheritor of the Zhana intangible cultural heritage, and his granddaughter Yelina.

The vivid human figures and skiing postures depicted in the ancient murals of Altay represent the earliest records of human skiing 12,000 years ago.

Grandpa Silanbieke and his granddaughter Yelina live in the village of Snow City Altay. As an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of fur skis, Grandpa Silanbieke handmade a pair of fur skis for his granddaughter.

Guided by her grandfather, Yelina put on the traditional fur skis of the Altay people and learned to ski on the snowy mountains.

Through the passage of time, the source of snow and the bonds of blood continue to preserve tradition.
